When is the Best Time to Go to Puerto Rico's Bioluminescent Bay

The Best (and Worst) Time to Visit Puerto Rico

If you like picturesque beaches and amazing culture, odds are that Puerto Rico is already on your radar. After all, if you’re a U.S. citizen you don’t even need a passport to visit!

Of course, the only downside is the regular hurricanes that come barrelling into the area.

Knowing that, to make the best of your Puerto Rico vacation, it’s important to know the best time to go to Puerto Rico. Even putting the hurricanes aside, there are some great seasonal events you wouldn’t want to miss.

So, what are we waiting for? Let’s get into the question of: “What is the best time to go to Puerto Rico?”

When should you not go to Puerto Rico?

Best Time to Go To Puerto Rico - Hurrican Flooding

When traveling to islands like Japan or Puerto Rico, severe tropical weather should always be on your mind.

Though this man might be trying to laugh off the effects of Hurricane Ida, anyone will tell you that hurricane season isn’t great in Puerto Rico. No doubt, that’s the biggest reason why September is such an unpopular month to visit.

September also receives at least 5 inches of rainfall almost every year, which is more than double that of February.

Overall, we don’t think anyone would argue that September is the best time to go to Puerto Rico. Well, unless you want the cheapest hotel prices.

While we did already mention that hurricane season is at its worst in September, storms can also occur in late August and October. However, October is generally more risky than August. That explains why it’s the second least popular month to visit.

Overall, though, none of these months are the best time of year to go to Puerto Rico.

How long is hurricane season in Puerto Rico?

The official hurricane season for Puerto Rico spans from June 1 to November 30. But don’t panic!

Hurricanes at the tail ends of the season are far more uncommon, so you don’t have to cancel your vacation scheduled for June 5th. While this time of the year isn’t the best time to go to Puerto Rico, June, July and November can be perfectly sound vacations.

However, if you do end up getting caught in a hurricane, having a portable power bank might come in handy.

What months are the rainy season in Puerto Rico?

Not including the effects of tropical storms, the rainiest months in Puerto Rico are May and November. Both see an average rainfall of just under 6 inches.

For most, this can be a real bummer. But, if you’re a fan of the rain these months might just be the best time to go to Puerto Rico for you.

Best time of year to go to Puerto Rico

There are a few months to consider when it comes to determining the best time of the year to go to Puerto Rico. So, what is the best time to go to Puerto Rico?

The most popular months for travel are March and December, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the best time to visit Puerto Rico. In fact, these months can come with expensive hotel costs and crowded beaches.

If you're worried about rain, January, February and March see the least amount of precipitation.

Of course, you might also want to consider temperatures. For many around the U.S., a difference between 84 degrees in the winter and 89 in the summer is negligible. However, there are some who might not like the 60 degree January nights.

Overall, while we do recommend going between December and April, the best month to travel for you might not be the same as someone else's. These are just our picks for the best time to go to Puerto Rico.

If you’re worried about the best time to go to Puerto Rico, odds are it might be because of the bioluminescent bay. But, whats the best time to go to Puerto Rico if you want to see it?

By far the best time to see this amazing phenomenon is during the dry season (between December-April). This is because the June-November rain and clouds can make it difficult to see the glow.

However, the best months to visit for the bioluminescent bay are either February or April, due to the less prominent crowds.
